YouTube is now seen as a synonym to the word “VIDEO”. When people want to watch a video(or just want to hear the audio component), the easiest thing is to go to YouTube and play it. Sure, there are other alternatives, but none of them beats the simplicity and the speed of YouTube.
More recently, there has been a sort of competition for the “Most Viewed YouTube Video” slot. While videos earlier took a lot of time to top the charts on YouTube, videos like PSY’s Gangam Style has exploded to the top of the chart. Yes, I use the word exploded because the video reached there in a much shorter time period than others.
Let us take a look at the most popular YouTube videos of all time.
1. PSY – GANGAM STYLE (1,751,069,353)
PSY’s popular dance video Gangam Style which was published on YouTube on July 15, 2012 rose very quickly to top the charts on November 24, 2012. The video dethroned Justein Beiber’s Baby which was ruling the charts for two years before that. After being the first ever YouTube Video to cross 1 billion views (and still being the only one to do that!), the video views are increasing fast and are headed towards 2 billion.
2. Justin Bieber – Baby ft. Ludacris (885,719,778)
Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ remained at the top position for nearly 2 years before Gangam Style outnumbered it. The video outnumbered “Charlie bit my finger – Again!” (which has now slipped to number 7) in January 2011 to gain the first spot.
3. Jennifer Lopez – On The Floor ft. Pitbull (686,378,130)
4. Eminem – Love The Way You Lie ft. Rihanna (588,344,090)
5. LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem ft. Lauren Bennett, GoonRock (563,569,219)
It might seem weird that all of the videos in the Top 5 most popular YouTube videos list are music videos. There is so much else on Youtube. The useful tutorials, inspirational speeches, popular nursery rhymes, there is just so much, but the videos that gain the top slot are mostly music videos. This can be attributed to two factors. One, music videos go viral very easily due to sharing on social platforms. And what it takes to make any Youtube video an instant hit is just one Tweet by a celebrity!
The other reason for the popularity of these videos is probably that they are not always being used for the video part. As I said earlier, whenever you want to listen to a song, you would open YouTube and listen to it. YouTube is the best source for ‘legal’ and ‘free’ songs. Oh, and I forgot that contributing to the popularity of these videos are also the multiple ‘parodies’ created for each song. There are just so many parodies of Gangam Style on Youtube. For, when people see a parody of something, it is quite obvious they will feel the urge to see the original too!
